CBSE Standard & Advanced Levels — from 2026–27

From the 2026–27 session, CBSE introduces a two-level system for Classes 9–12 in core subjects. Axel is ready — and so are our students.

What is changing: From Class 9 in the 2026–27 academic session, CBSE will offer two levels — Standard and Advanced — for core subjects beginning with Mathematics and Science. The first Advanced-level Board examinations will be held in 2028. This mirrors differentiated pathways in the IB and Cambridge A-Level systems, giving students the freedom to match their depth of study to their actual aspirations — without penalising them on their overall Board score.

Standard Level

Covers the full CBSE syllabus with comprehensive conceptual coverage and board-exam readiness. The right choice for students targeting commerce, humanities, design, law or fields where Mathematics and Science are supporting subjects rather than primary ones.

Standard level is rigorous. It is not a reduced programme — it is a focused one.

Advanced Level

More rigorous academic content, faster pace, and deeper problem-solving — specifically designed to prepare students for JEE, NEET, engineering and science university admissions. Advanced Mathematics and Advanced Science go beyond the standard CBSE syllabus into territory that was previously only covered in coaching centres.

At Axel, Advanced-level students will benefit from our integrated PhysicsWallah programme, which already operates at this depth.

How Axel counsels students

Every Class IX student at Axel is counselled before level selection using three inputs: academic performance data from Middle Stage, aptitude assessment, and a one-on-one session with our academic counsellor and the student's parents.

No student selects a level alone. The decision is made with full context — not pressure. Both levels lead to excellent outcomes when matched correctly to the student.

CBSE Board & Academic Standards

A 100% pass rate is the floor, not the ceiling. What matters is what students do with their education.

CBSE Affiliation No. 230102 — Axel Public School conducts CBSE Board examinations for Class X (Secondary) and Class XII (Senior Secondary). Every student who has sat the Board examination at Axel has passed. Our consistent performance has been recognised by the CBSE Regional Office, Guwahati. From 2026–27, we implement the new CBSE Standard and Advanced level framework from Class IX.

Class IX & X — Secondary

Subjects: English Core, Mathematics (Standard or Advanced from 2026–27), Science (Standard or Advanced), Social Science, and one elective. Science at Axel is taken as three separate subjects — Physics, Chemistry, Biology — taught by dedicated subject teachers. Internal assessments are as rigorous as the Board exam.

Students may exit after Class X and re-enter in Class XI–XII to pursue their chosen stream — including vocational, science, commerce or arts — here at Axel or at a more specialised institution. Class X counselling helps students navigate this decision with full data and guidance.

Class XI & XII — Senior Secondary Streams

Science (PCM / PCB / PCMB): Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and/or Biology. The standard pathway for JEE, NEET, engineering and medical university admissions.

Science with AI & Data Science: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science (Python, AI, Data Science). For students who want to enter technology, research or data-driven fields.

Commerce: Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Mathematics. For students with an interest in business, finance, CA, MBA and entrepreneurship pathways.

Teaching philosophy

Every senior school subject teacher has a postgraduate qualification and minimum five years of teaching experience. Science and Mathematics faculty hold degrees from institutions including IIT, IISER and NIT.

We do not teach to the exam. We teach for understanding — and the exam results reflect that. Students who genuinely understand Physics pass Physics. The converse does not hold, and our students know it.

Weekly peer teaching sessions from Class X — where stronger students teach concepts to peers — are one of the highest-value activities in our academic programme. Teaching deepens understanding in the teacher as much as the taught.

Results that speak

Axel graduates have been admitted to IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Guwahati, BITS Pilani, NIT Silchar and universities in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia.

Our top performers consistently score above 95% in Board examinations. The school median in Class XII Science is 78%. No student has scored below 60% in the CBSE Board examinations in the last decade.

Integrated JEE-NEET with PhysicsWallah

Not an after-school programme bolted on. A carefully designed integrated curriculum built together with PhysicsWallah that runs alongside the CBSE Board schedule.

Daily

Integrated teaching sessions

Two hours of integrated JEE/NEET content every day, timetabled within the school day — not at 9 pm when students are exhausted. School teachers and PW faculty teach the same topics in coordinated sequence.

No topic is taught twice. The CBSE syllabus and JEE/NEET syllabus are mapped, merged and delivered as one. Students do not carry two separate workloads.

Weekly

Full-length mock tests

Full JEE/NEET pattern mock tests every Saturday from July of Class XI. Tests are analysed, performance reported individually, and reviewed chapter by chapter in the following Monday session.

By Class XII, students have sat over 60 full-length mocks. The actual exam is familiar territory. Anxiety is managed through preparation, not pep talks.

Individual

Academic mentorship

Every JEE/NEET-track student is assigned a dedicated academic mentor — a senior faculty member who monitors their chapter-level performance, identifies gaps and adjusts their personal study plan fortnightly.

Mentors are available during study hours every evening. No student is left to figure out their weaknesses alone.

Resources

PW Study Materials & Platform

All enrolled students receive full access to PhysicsWallah's study materials, video lectures, test series and doubt-resolution platform. PW faculty conduct live revision classes for every major topic.

This is the same content delivered in standalone PW coaching centres — included within the school programme. There is no need to enrol anywhere else.

Track record

Results

Axel alumni appear at IIT Guwahati, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, AIIMS Delhi and AIIMS Guwahati. NEET qualifiers have secured MBBS seats at government medical colleges in Assam and beyond.

JEE Advanced qualifiers from the school have gone on to careers in aerospace, semiconductors, AI research and academic medicine.

Not just JEE-NEET

For every student

JEE/NEET coaching is available to enrolled Science stream students. Students not on this track receive equivalent academic support — additional Maths and Science problem-solving sessions, career counselling, and preparation for CUET and international university admissions.

A rigorous academic culture benefits every student, regardless of their destination.

AI & Data Science Stream

Offered as a full Class XI–XII stream alongside the CBSE Computer Science syllabus. The only school in Northeast India offering this at this depth.

What students learn

Advanced Python, data analysis with Pandas and NumPy, machine learning with scikit-learn, deep learning fundamentals with TensorFlow, SQL and database design, cloud computing basics (AWS/GCP), and AI ethics and policy.

Students graduate capable of building and deploying machine learning models — a skill set that was graduate-level only five years ago.

The stream is recognised by CBSE under the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence curriculum and prepares students for B.Tech (CSE/AI), B.Sc (Data Science) and international technology programmes.

Capstone projects & industry exposure

Every AI stream student completes a two-term individual capstone project — a real application using real data. Projects are evaluated by an external panel that has included data scientists from technology companies.

Annual Industry Connect programme brings CTOs, AI researchers and entrepreneurs to campus. Students have done internships with technology firms in Guwahati as part of their Class XII curriculum.

Alumni in the AI stream have been admitted to IIT Madras (Data Science), BITS Goa (CS), and international universities including NTU Singapore and University of Edinburgh.

University counselling & placements

We take students to the right next step — whether that is IIT, AIIMS, Oxbridge or somewhere in between.

Dedicated university counsellor

Every Class XI student is assigned to a university counsellor who works with them from stream selection through to university application. For Indian admissions: JEE/NEET/CUET strategy. For international: SAT/ACT/IELTS, personal statement writing and interview preparation.

Parents are included in all counselling milestones. No student navigates the application process alone.

Alumni network

Over 2,000 alumni from the Class of 2004 onward. Professions include: Airline Pilots (IndiGo, Air India), ISRO scientists, academic researchers (IIT, IISER), doctors, NID and Film Institute graduates, national-level athletes, IAS and IPS officers.

Alumni actively mentor current students. The formal mentorship programme pairs every Class XI student with an Axel alumnus in their field of interest.

World-class sports at senior level

Academic excellence and sporting excellence reinforce each other. Discipline, resilience and teamwork are the same skills in both arenas.

Cricket — Full Academy

Ranji-qualified head coach. Full turf wicket with proper floodlighting. Video biomechanics analysis for batting and bowling technique. Six-day training week for academy students. Axel alumni have played for Assam senior team.

Swimming — Competition Level

25-metre pool. Level-3 certified coach. Periodised annual training plan. Senior school swimmers regularly compete at state level. National School Games qualifiers trained here every year.

Archery — National Standard

SAI-affiliated programme. Recurve, compound and barebow. Students have won National School Games medals. The archery range is maintained to full competition standard with electronic scoring available.

Football, Basketball, Badminton

Inter-school competitions are a serious calendar commitment. The school football team plays in the Guwahati District League. National-level coaches in all three disciplines. Badminton players have reached state junior finals.

Yoga & Martial Arts

Advanced yoga for students preparing for competitive events. Karate with a Black Belt instructor — several senior students are Dan-grade holders. Both disciplines are valued for the mental focus they develop during the high-pressure Board years.

Sports scholarships

Exceptional student-athletes receive the Sports Excellence Grant — 50% tuition waiver plus specialist coaching at no additional charge. Applications are assessed on competition record and commitment. View all scholarships →

Boarding for senior students

Students from across Assam and the seven sister states board at Axel for the senior years. The boarding community is one of the school's greatest assets.

What boarding includes

Accommodation in supervised dormitories, three organic meals plus evening snack, laundry, supervised study hours (6–8 pm daily), access to all sports facilities, weekend activities, and pastoral care from a dedicated House Parent.

Boarding students have a structured evening where study is protected. Devices are secured at 9:30 pm. Sleep is taken seriously.

The boarding community

Boarders come from Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Sikkim and remote areas of Assam. The diversity of the boarding community is one of the most valuable educations we offer — no classroom can replicate it.

The Northeast Heritage Scholarship offers a 30% boarding fee waiver for students from the seven sister states. Learn more →

Student leadership programme

Senior students are expected to lead — not just participate. The programme develops responsibility, communication and problem-solving across Classes IX to XII.

Student Council

Executive positions — School President, Vice President, Academic Secretary, Cultural Secretary, Sports Secretary and Eco Captain — are open to Class X and XI students by annual secret ballot. The Council has a real budget, consultation rights on school policy, and fortnightly access to the Principal. Past council members have gone on to law, civil services, medicine and national-level student governance.

House captaincy

Each of the four houses — Cygnus, Monoceros, Aquila and Pegasus — elects a Captain and Vice-Captain from Class X and XI respectively. House captains manage event logistics for the full inter-house calendar, maintain point tallies, represent their house at formal school functions and sit on the Student Council with voting rights.

Event & competition leadership

Inter-house tournaments, Cultural Night, the Annual Science Exhibition and the school debate programme are all student-run at the senior level. Class XI and XII students chair committees, manage budgets, brief junior participants and are accountable for outcomes — exactly the kind of experience that admissions officers and employers look for.

Peer mentoring

Senior students in Class XI and XII formally mentor Class VI–VII students through the peer tutoring network. One session per week. Mentors set goals, track progress and report to the Academic Secretary. The programme builds communication and teaching skills while directly supporting academic performance in the junior school.

NCC command roles

Senior NCC cadets hold Under Officer and Cadet Non-Commissioned Officer positions within the school unit, commanding junior cadets during drill, field exercises and social service deployments. The NCC ‘C’ certificate, attainable in Class XII, carries direct benefits in government and defence recruitment across India.

Representing the school

Whether at Model UN conferences, inter-school debates, sports tournaments, cultural festivals or community service initiatives, senior students represent Axel publicly. The expectation is clear: lead by example, act with accountability and leave every room better than you found it.

Frequently asked questions

About Axel's Secondary Stage — Classes IX to XII.

What streams are available at Class XI?
Axel offers Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Mathematics / Computer Science combinations), Commerce (Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Mathematics / Computer Science) and Humanities (History, Political Science, Geography, Economics, Psychology). Multidisciplinary combinations crossing stream boundaries are possible — speak to the Vice Principal (Academic) for specific subject combinations available in a given year.
What is the CBSE Standard and Advanced level system launching from 2026–27?
From 2026–27, CBSE introduces a two-level system for several subjects from Class IX onwards. The Standard level follows the regular CBSE syllabus and Board examination. The Advanced level offers a deeper, more rigorous treatment — suitable for students targeting competitive examinations or specialist university programmes. Axel counsels each student on which level matches their goals. Students are not locked into a choice permanently; level changes can be made at the end of Class IX with teacher guidance.
When should we start thinking about stream and level selection?
Stream counselling begins formally in Class IX. By the end of Class X, students will have had multiple conversations with subject teachers, the school counsellor and — where needed — external career guidance. The school's position: a well-informed choice at the right time is better than an early choice made under pressure. The Career Fair for Classes XI and XII, held annually, gives students direct access to professionals across every field.
Is JEE/NEET coaching integrated into the school day or separate?
Integrated. Axel runs a JEE-NEET preparation programme in partnership with PhysicsWallah for Classes XI and XII students targeting engineering and medical entrance examinations. Sessions are built into the school timetable — not held as separate evening classes — so students do not have to choose between Board preparation and entrance exam preparation. Students also visit IIT Guwahati and attend interactive sessions with faculty as part of the programme.
Can a student exit after Class X and re-enter for Class XI–XII?
Yes. Under the NEP 2020 framework, students who complete Class X may exit and return later to complete Class XI–XII. Axel's Secondary Stage supports this pathway. Students returning after a gap are assessed and placed with appropriate academic support. Contact the admissions office for specific re-entry procedures and current availability.
Is boarding available for senior students?
Yes. Axel has a residential boarding facility for secondary students at the Lokhra campus. Boarding students live in a supervised, structured environment — with study hours, meals, sports and pastoral care managed by resident houseparents. Boarding is particularly well-suited to families from outside Guwahati. Enquire at the school office for boarding availability and fee details.
How does university counselling work at Axel?
University counselling begins formally in Class XI. The process covers Indian university applications (CUET and direct admissions), competitive entrance examination strategy, portfolio building for arts and design courses, and — for students targeting international universities — application timelines, personal statement support and IELTS/SAT guidance. Alumni at leading institutions are available to speak with current students, and an annual interactive session with professionals — including those working in international organisations — gives students a direct window into diverse career paths.
What is Axel's CBSE Board pass percentage?
Axel maintains a 100% pass rate in both CBSE Class X and Class XII Board examinations. Multiple students score above 90% aggregate each year. The school does not publish a single headline topper figure — we believe measuring a school by its highest scorers alone is misleading. What matters is that every student who sits the Board leaves with a result they can build on.

The Secondary Stage — done properly.

Multidisciplinary study. Standard and Advanced CBSE levels from 2026–27. PhysicsWallah-integrated JEE-NEET. AI & Data Science stream. 100% Board pass rate. University placements on four continents. National sports. Class IX–XII at Axel is built around your child's aspirations — not a single fixed track.
