Academic programme

CBSE curriculum taken seriously — and then taken further. Middle school is where intellectual identity is formed.

Science

Physics, Chemistry and Biology taught by subject specialists from Class VI — not by a single "Science teacher." Weekly 90-minute lab sessions. Students design and conduct independent experiments from Class VII.

Science Olympiad training is embedded in the curriculum, not offered as extra coaching. NSO, Science Talent Search and NTSE preparation are part of the regular academic plan.

Mathematics

Advanced problem-solving beyond the CBSE syllabus. Mathematical reasoning, proof-writing and competitive-level problem sets from Class VII. IMO preparation integrated into Class VIII.

Students who show particular aptitude are streamed into an enrichment track where Class VIII mathematics includes content typically covered in Class X — a genuine head-start for the Board years.

English & Social Sciences

Literature, essay and debate. Students read full novels and non-fiction alongside the textbook. Annual debating championships — internal and inter-school — are compulsory participation events, not optional clubs.

History, Geography, Political Science and Economics taught with real current-affairs integration. Students are expected to form and defend opinions with evidence.

AI, Coding & Robotics

We do not prepare students for the world as it was. We prepare them for the world as it is becoming.

Class VI: Python & Data

Students who completed Scratch in primary school transition to Python. Real programmes: data processing scripts, web scrapers, simple automation. The first term project is a working Python application.

Introduction to version control (Git), problem decomposition and debugging — the professional habits of software engineers, taught at twelve years old.

Class VIII: AI Project & Showcase

Each Class VIII student completes an individual AI project that is presented at the annual Technology Showcase to parents, faculty and invited guests from industry. Past projects have included: a crop disease detection model, a sign-language recognition tool, and a local language translation system.

These are not toy projects. Several have been developed further by students after Class VIII and submitted to national competitions.

Class VII: Machine Learning & Robotics

Machine learning concepts introduced through hands-on tools — Google Teachable Machine, ML4Kids, simple neural network visualisers. Students understand what training data is, how models learn, and where they fail.

The Robotics Club uses Arduino and Raspberry Pi platforms. Students build autonomous robots that compete in the inter-school Robotics League held annually in Guwahati. Axel teams have been finalists three years running.

Infrastructure

Dedicated AI and Robotics Lab with 40 workstations, component library, soldering stations and a 3D printer. All students have supervised access. The lab is open after school until 5:30 pm for students working on projects.

Strong internet connectivity, cloud accounts for every student, and a curated digital library of AI learning resources managed by our full-time Technology Coordinator.

Student leadership programme

From Class VI, students take on structured leadership roles — in student government, inter-house competitions, clubs and community service. Responsibility, communication and problem-solving are not soft extras; they are part of the curriculum.

Student Council

A fully elected student council with real authority — budgets, event planning, school policy consultation. Class VI to VIII students stand for election annually. The Principal meets the council fortnightly. Students learn that leadership is service.

Community Service

Axel students have logged 749 cumulative hours of community service — flood relief, tree planting, rural school teaching programmes and health camps in partnership with local NGOs. Middle school students contribute a minimum of 40 hours across Class VI–VIII.

Butterfly Conservation Park

The only butterfly conservation park in Northeast India is managed by Axel students. Middle schoolers maintain habitat zones, conduct species counts and lead guided tours for visiting school groups. Real science, real responsibility.

Drama & Public Speaking

Annual school play with full production values. Public speaking is a curriculum subject, not a club. By Class VIII, students have delivered prepared speeches, participated in Model UN and competed in inter-school debates.

Career Orientation

From Class VIII, students attend a structured career orientation programme. Visits from alumni in diverse fields — engineering, medicine, arts, business, civil services. Students map their interests and aptitudes before choosing Class XI streams.

NCC & Scouts

National Cadet Corps and Scouts & Guides available from Class VI. Both develop discipline, teamwork and service values that complement the academic programme. Annual camp participation is encouraged for all enrolled cadets.

Sports specialisation

The middle years are when serious athletes emerge. Our coaches have produced state and national-level players across six disciplines.

Cricket Academy

Full turf wicket, bowling machines, video analysis and a head coach who played Ranji Trophy. Students in the academy train six mornings per week. Several Axel alumni have represented Assam in Under-19 and senior cricket.

Selection trials are held in April. The academy has 40 places across middle and senior school.

Swimming

Our 25-metre competition pool hosts district-level meets. Middle school swimmers train with a Level-3 certified coach. Competitive swimmers follow a structured periodisation plan with regular time trials and inter-school competition.

Past Axel swimmers have represented Assam at the National School Games and Sub-Junior Nationals.

Archery

Our archery programme is among the strongest in Northeast India. A SAI-affiliated coach leads a structured development pathway — from recurve introduction to compound and barebow. Students have won medals at the National School Games in Recurve events.

Football, Basketball & Badminton

Inter-school competitions from Class VI. Full-size pitches and courts. Football team has won the Guwahati District Schools Championship twice. Badminton players have reached state-level junior finals. All sports have dedicated after-school training three days per week.

Frequently asked questions

About Axel's Middle Stage — Classes VI to VIII.

What subjects are studied in Classes VI to VIII?
Core subjects include English, Hindi, Assamese, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Computer Science. Sanskrit is available as a third language option. From Class VI, subjects are taught by specialist teachers — unlike the class-teacher model in primary school. Physical Education, Art and Value Education continue across all three years.
What is the assessment and examination pattern?
Classes VI to VIII follow the CBSE structure: two terms per year with periodic tests (20 marks each) across both terms and term-end examinations. Projects, practicals and portfolio work contribute to the final grade. Report cards are shared with parents at the end of each term, with a parent-teacher meeting scheduled alongside.
Is there a community service requirement in middle school?
Yes. Middle school students are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service across Classes VI to VIII. Service is structured through the Community Service Corps and Udayan club — activities range from environmental drives and tree planting to exchanges with schools abroad under the British Council's RIDS programme.
How does the house system work?
Every student from Class I to XII belongs to one of Axel's four houses — Brahmaputra, Ganga, Indus and Yamuna. House captains and vice-captains are elected by students each March. Points accumulate through academics, sports, cultural events and community service. The Middle Stage is where house competition becomes most active.
Are there residential or educational trips at this stage?
Yes. The annual field trip programme for the Middle Stage includes some of Axel's most significant excursions — Sualkuchi Silk Village (Class VI), Madan Kamdev (Class VII) and Akshar Foundation School, Pamohi (Class VIII). Each trip has an academic component: pre-trip preparation, on-site tasks and a post-trip report as part of the term assessment.
Is competitive exam preparation available at this stage?
Foundation preparation for Olympiads (Mathematics, Science, English) begins from Class VI through the Mathematics & Olympiad Club and Science & Environment Club. Axel students regularly participate in SOF Olympiads and the Aryabhatta Ganit Challenge. Formal JEE/NEET foundation is not introduced until Class IX.
When do students choose their Class XI stream?
Stream counselling begins formally in Class IX. By the end of Class X, students make a formal stream choice — Science, Commerce or Humanities — in consultation with their subject teachers, school counsellor and parents. The school does not push students toward any single stream. A well-informed choice made at the right time is better than an early choice made under pressure.
How does the school support students through early adolescence?
The School Counsellor works with middle school students throughout the year — through classroom sessions on peer relationships, identity and resilience, and through individual conversations when needed. The house system and its staff play a pastoral role. Age-appropriate wellness sessions including Good Touch / Bad Touch awareness are conducted annually.

Where intellectual ambition meets character

Middle school at Axel is the crucible. Students who come out of Class VIII are ready — academically, socially and personally — for anything the senior years will demand.
